The Humming Room by Ellen Potter

The story needs no introduction for those who are familiar with The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Little orphan girl goes to live in a big house which contains big secrets and holds great promise. It ends up changing her life and many more.

This retelling of the classic story is cute and accurate. All the main characters are there, and the story follows the original quite faithfully. The modern characters did have a life of their own, however, and it kept my interest, although I already knew the basics of the plot. The story has a few surprises in store as well, which I appreciated.
Maybe, for a retelling, it stuck a bit too close to the original tale, but I saw that as an homage to the Secret Garden's original magic, and I appreciated it.
It was definitely worth the read, and I plan on rereading it soon.
